The 2013 East Carbon/Sunnyside Community Daze Grand Marshal is Carmin Bonacci, a distinguished World War II Army veteran and East Carbon resident since 1948.

Bonacci's family came to Sunnyside from Italy in 1908 to work in the coal mines which brought so many to Carbon County. His mother would arrive a year later and give birth to all three of her children in Sunnyside (Carmin, Mike and Mary). Bonacci's mother died when he was just 18 months old.

After receiving the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and Philippine Liberator Victory Medal during his time in the military, Bonacci was honorably discharged in 1945 and came to East Carbon. He began a life-long career in the area's coke ovens and underground coal mines.

Bonacci's work life began with his father and brother at the Sunnyside Coke Ovens where he toiled for 10 years. He then went underground at the Columbia Mine until its shutdown, spending his last 14 years at Horse Canyon before retiring in 1980.

Bonacci can be seen driving around in his 1979 Chevy Impala.

"I appreciate Dave Summers keeping it in good running condition all these years," he said when interviewed for the East Carbon City News Letter.

As a member of a close-knit family, Bonacci lives with his daughter Judy in his Berkley Avenue home. His son Charles lives in West Valley, while his daughter Diana resides in Carbonville with her husband Kent Houghton. He has four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His wife of 62 years Amelia, passed away in 2003.

This year's grand marshal is a spry 90 years old.
