The Rock Creek Fire 15 miles east of East Carbon appeared to be yielding to a continuous aerial bombardment by Monday.

"It has been mostly an air show," said Marian Swinney of the Moab Interagency Fire Center. She reported Monday afternoon that the fire was nearing containment. However, winds are expected to pick up on Tuesday and Wednesday so things could change, she advised.

The fire began with a lightning strike last Thursday. It spread through mainly leaf litter and understory, with scrub oak, some conifers and aspens affected.

As of Monday afternoon, about 235 acres were involved.

On Sunday, the fire fighting effort involved two hand crews, three Type 1 (big) helicopters, seven Type 3 (smaller) choppers and one ground fire engine.
