Dinos set to meet familiar foe in 3A quarterfinals
After advancing to the 3A quarterfinals for the third straight year, the Carbon High baseball team will look to put past results behind them as they look to advance to the semifinals for the first time since winning the state title in 2005.
But a familiar foe awaits as the Dinos will faceoff against the Desert Hills Thunder today (Thursday, May 16) at 11 a.m. at UVU.
The last time the two teams met on the diamond, 2011 state tourney in the winner's bracket, Carbon had a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning. The aptly-named Thunder rallied for 10 runs over the final two innings to send the Dinos to the consolation bracket with a 12-3 loss.
After starting quickly on offense in both wins over Juan Diego and Dixie High on Saturday in the regionals, CHS head coach Troy Moynier said the importance of scoring early in games can help give the Dinos a boost.
"Getting an early lead helps build confidence for the kids out there," he said. While offense can be a key factor, Moynier said good play on defense to stop rallies can be devastating to a team trying to make a comeback.
If the Dinos defeat Desert Hills, they would face the winner of Snow Canyon/Canyon View on Friday at 4:30 p.m. If the Dinos lose, they will move to the consolation bracket on Friday morning at 11 a.m. with an opponent to be determined.
