Violet Mary Dalpiaz Thurman passed away May 10, 2013, in Grand Junction, Colo., at the age of 88.
Violet was born on March 21, 1925, to Silvio and Adeline Dalpiaz in Glenwood Springs, Colo. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas J. Thurman; and two brothers, Joey and Louie Dalpiaz.
Violet is survived by her sister, Sylvia Sillitoe, Helper; six children: Russell R. (Debbie) Thurman, Madison Heights, Va.; Violet M. (Terry) Carroll, Independence, Kan; Robert L. (Barbara) Thurman, Delta, Colo.; Lonnie B. Thurman, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Bill S. Thurman, Salt Lake City; Tommie Jean (Rich) Wagner, Grand Junction, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Violet grew up in Helper and graduated from Carbon High School in 1943. She was baptized and was a member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. She lived in various cities in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Montana. During World War II, she epitomized "Rosie The Riveter," working as an "oiler" on railroad engines in Helper.
During her lifetime, Violet made great sacrifices for her family. She was the "hardest working" waitress, cleaned motel rooms, operated a roadside produce stand, and lived on dairy farms and in coal mining towns. Her life was often marked with hardship, but she was a "tough woman," and was devoted to her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She cheered their accomplishments, prayed for their safety and was intensely protective of those whom she loved "more than you will ever know."
Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff and residents of Retreat at Harbor Cove in Grand Junction; and to Dr. James D. Utt and staff of Foresight Family Physicians.
Violet elected to be cremated, as did her husband. Her family will honor their lives during an internment celebration later this year at Mountain View Cemetery in Helper. Arrangements were provided by Callahan-Edfast Mortuary of Grand Junction.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 N. 12th St # B, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
