Sleepy driver clobbers police chief's cruiser
A man who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel last Friday afternoon collided head-on with the occupied and parked car of Wellington Police Chief Lee Barry, causing minor injuries and major property damage on Wellington's Main Street.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, James Skeem, 37, of East Carbon fell asleep while driving his PT Cruiser east bound on U.S. Highway 6 (which doubles as Main Street) in Wellington. While asleep, Skeem reportedly drifted through the center lane and two west bound lanes colliding with Chief Barry, who was parked and clocking drivers along the westbound shoulder near 240 West Main Street.
"He managed to hit the only police car on the street," laughed Barry as a tow truck removed his car from the road.
Skeem was cited by the UHP for illegal lane travel.
Both Barry and Skeem were reportedly wearing their seat-belts at the time of impact and although the air bags deployed in both vehicles, neither operator required medical transport from the scene.
