Late second half goal hands CHS tough region loss

After battling back-and-forth to a 2-2 tie in the first half, the Carbon High boys soccer team was entrenched on their end of the field fending off multiple advances and shot attempts by the Rabbits.

Each time Delta made a run towards the goal, the Dinos defense held strong and shut down the attack. However the Dinos were unable to consistently control the ball past midfield late in the game which gave Delta one opportunity too many as they connected on a late goal sending the Dinos to a tough 3-2 loss on April 3 at home.

Carbon High head coach Keith Palmer said his team played well in the first half but seemed to come out flat in the second half which gave Delta an opening to score late in the match.

"We just didn't play well overall," said Palmer. "We started off well in the first half but our energy fell as the game went on."

Palmer cited a week break between games and poor practices heading into the Delta game that may have contributed to the loss.

"That was the worst we've played in the last three weeks. We had bad practices before the game and the long break between games showed in our effort on the field in the second half," he said.

Hansol Kim and Dakota Powell scored the two goals for the Dinos with one coming on a free kick and the other coming off a corner kick.

With the loss, Carbon High (2-7-1 overall, 1-3-0 Region 12) now has little room for error over their final four Region 12 games starting with a road game against Delta on April 12. Palmer said the team came back with good effort in the practices since the Delta game and he is confident the team will step up to the challenge over the final part of the season.

"If we can beat Delta and North Sanpete (April 24) at home, then we can put ourselves in good position for a playoff spot," he said.
