The Carbon High Dino was voted the Most Unique mascot among high schools from nine western states Wednesday.
The final tally in the Region 6 division of the USA Today Best Mascot Contest had Carbon with 1,729,856 votes. In second place was the Oregon Episcopal High School Aardvarks, a Portland school with slightly more than 1.5 million votes.
Carbon now gets to compete at the national level for a $2,000 first prize for its athletic programs. Smaller prizes are awarded to lower finishers.
This is a competition of keystrokes and patience. People who log into the voting website can vote as often as they want.
Since individual schools and their communities are most likely to vote for their own mascot, it means that Carbon students and their supporters caused the victory.
For a county of 20,000, 1.7 million is a lot of keystrokes.
Region 6 includes Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
The balloting blitz for the national competition begins Thursday and runs through March 27.
