The Golden Eagles are flying high after posting a perfect 6-0 sweep over three days against Dawson Community College in Price.

"That's the best I've seen us play all year long," said USU Eastern head coach Scott Madsen. "We hit well and our pitchers stepped up for us in every game."

The Golden Eagles were helped by strong pitching performances that included a total of 37 1/3 innings with 50 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Joe Barta, Chance Abrath, Jake Meservey, Shayden Poulsen, Brayden Jorgensen and Nate Hardman all pitched well including Barta who led the team to a 13-5 on Saturday with a 7 inning, 15 strikeout outing.

"We've got some workhorses like Chance and Joe who pitched extremely well and the rest of the staff who stepped up and got some big wins," said Madsen.

While the pitching staff had plenty to be happy about, Madsen said the hitters are continuing their streak of good games. Abrath, Denver Hansen and Sam Trout had big weekends at the plate with multiple hits and runs batted in.

The Golden Eagles offense is currently ranked fourth in the nation in NJCAA DII with 170 runs and is second in home runs with 15.

Since losing their first eight games of the season, the Golden Eagles have gone 13-3 since then to put them at 13-11 and over .500 on the season.

Madsen said it was a big confidence booster for the team to get back above .500 on the season with conference play on the horizon.

"This past weekend was like a stepping stone as it gets us to where we want to be as a team with strong pitching and good hitting from the entire lineup," he said.

While the team is above .500 on the season, there is no time to rest. With tough teams on the schedule including going on the road to face Colorado Northwestern CC (Friday and Saturday) and Salt Lake CC (March 29-30), Madsen said the team will need to be ready to play in every game.

"We have to come out and play strong in every game," he said. "It's tough to stay above .500 but the kids know that all of our games count now."
