Two Carbon High wrestlers went head-to-head with some of the best wrestlers in 3A during competition at the State Tournament in Orem.

Carbon High wrestlers Ryan Matkin and Kahill Hunt advanced onto the State Tournament after finishing within the top 8 of their weight classes during a Division Meet held last week in Richfield.

At the State Meet, Matkin, wrestling at 132 lbs, went 0-2 before being eliminated in the consolation bracket. CHS head coach Steve Woodhouse said Matkin had a tough weekend as he was defeated by two wrestlers he had competed against earlier this season.

Hunt, wrestling at 145 lbs, went 1-2 at the tournament battling wrestlers in one of the toughest weight classes in the state, according to Woodhouse.

Despite the end result for Matkin and Hunt, Woodhouse said that success can be difficult to attain in wrestling if you are not 100 percent focused.

"That's just wrestling for you," he explained. "It's win or go home."

Woodhouse noted that both wrestlers finished the season with winning records and both are interested in continuing to wrestle in college.

While a goal going into the tournament was to place, Woodhouse said it was still a successful season with many wrestlers improving along the way.

"I'm very happy with how the season has panned out," he said. "I'm also pleased with our fight and that our guys never gave up at any point."
