HELPER - Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and neighbor, Laurence Cha passed away Feb. 15, 2013 at the age of 88.
He was born on Jan. 19, 1925 to Michael Angelo and Mary Pavignano Cha in the coal camp of Mutual. He spent his childhood exploring the surrounding mountains and helping out in the Mutual Store.
On June 21, 1950, Laurence married his sweetheart Vera Matthews in Price. The couple spent the majority of their married life in Helper, where they raised their family.
Laurence was a lifetime member of Stella D'America Italian Lodge #77, where he most recently held the position of vice-president. As a lifelong resident of Carbon County, he was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America, where he served as the secretary of Local 6508 for many years. He was also employed by Helper Mercantile, which allowed him to meet and make many friends in the local community. Laurence was a tireless worker who enjoyed laying bricks, blocks, building his own home, and was always finding projects to keep himself busy. He enjoyed the outdoors, including fishing, hunting and camping. He was also a member of the Good Sam's Club. One of his preferred pastimes was playing Greek Rummy, which he loved teaching to his grandchildren.
Survived by his wife, Vera Cha, Helper; children, Michael A. Cha, Laura L. (Van) Cook, both of Helper, Linda (David) Dimick, Price; brother Fred (Vesta) Cha, Rapid City, S.D.; brother-in-law, Jack (Della) Matthews, Salt Lake City; sisters-in-law, Charmaine Matthews, Spring Glen, Marion Cha, Price, Maria Matthews, Price; grandchildren, Tony (Candace) Cook, Janell (J.R.) Nelson, Aaron (Paige) Dimick, Keisha (Aaron) Stefanoff; great-grandchildren, Claire, Mason, Bella, Mckenleigh, Gavin, Shontae; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents (including in-laws); brothers, Johnny Scarsi and Joe Cha; brother-in-law Glynn Jr. Matthews, and a grandson Jeremy Cook.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the love and care of Laurence throughout the past years.
Friends are welcome to join the family at Mitchell Funeral Home Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 from 6 - 7 p.m. and also Wednesday one hour prior to services. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment, Mt. View Cemetery, Helper.
