Carbon High Swim Team prepares for State
The Carbon High Swim team hosted the Region 12 swim meet on Jan. 26 with eight teams in attendance including Carbon, Emery, Delta, Grand, Payson, Richfield, Spanish Fork, Wasatch Academy.
Carbon girls finished in third place while Emery took first place with a score of 271, Richfield took second with 257 and Carbon finishing with 252 points. Carbon boys swam very well with only 10 boys participating as they finished in second with 223.5 points.
The top finishers for the girls squad were Paula Gibson placing second and qualifying for State in both of her individual events 50 free with a time of 27.76 and the 100 free finishing in 1:03.28. Lonnie Meineche, the Region champ and qualifying for state in the 500 free, finished with a time of 5:42.89, and in second and qualifying for state in the 100 fly with a time of 1:06.16. Brittney Willson took fourth in the 100 free at 1:05.78 and 200 free at 2:28.42 Tati Larsen had an impressive swim taking nine seconds off her time in the 200 free finishing in 2:36.06. The girls 400 free relay team became region champs with the team consisting of Paula Gibson, Brittney Willson, Lauren Engar, and Lonnie Meineche. The same four girls took second place in the 200 free relay. All three girls relays will be competing the at State Championship meet.
For the boys team, Thory VanDyke had a great swim in the 200 IM dropping eight seconds off his time finishing in fourth place with a time of 2:35.12. He also qualified for state for the first time in the 100 breaststroke as he took second place with a time of 1:11.37. Joseph Keller also improved his time finishing in fifth with a time of 2:38.31. Brent Keller took second and qualified for State in the 100 fly (1:00.48) and 500 free (5:22.36). Lance Riche finished in second in both of his events and qualified for state in the 100 free (54.23) and 100 back (1:04.99). Dakota Powell also qualified for state in the 50 free and 100 fly.
The Carbon boys were crowned region champs in the 200 free relay for the second year in a row and finished second in the 400 free relay. All three boys relays qualified for State Championships that will be held at BYU on Feb. 8-9.
"I am so proud of my team this year they have all made great improvements and they have such positive attitudes," said Carbon High head coach Kamera Davis. "I am excited to have so many swimmers going to state this year I am taking a total of 14 swimmers and three alternates. It is the most individuals in my five years of coaching and it will be a lot of fun."
