PRICE - Donald Alan Adams, age 81, passed away Jan. 23, 2013 in Price.
Don was born to Robert Lawrence and Esther Lambe Adams in Everett, Wash., on Dec. 13, 1931. On graduating from Garfield High School in Seattle, Don was awarded a scholarship to Telluride College in Pasadena, Calif. He later transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned both a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in Theatre. On Feb. 19, 1961, he married Pamela Roe in Longview, Wash., and they reared two living children, Wendy Elizabeth and Michael McKenna. One son, Timothy, was stillborn in 1969.
Don's academic career was interrupted when he served in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Whiteside and the USS Manatee. While he was completing his academic work, he was asked to serve in costume design and construction for the Portland Oregon Civic Theatre, and was appointed the first costume designer for the Seattle Repertory Theatre. On completion of his graduate work, he was appointed to the faculty of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., later to the faculty of Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., and later, to the faculty of Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash.
In 1984, Don was hired as costume designer and professor of theatre at Southwest Missouri State University-now Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO. On leaving Missouri, Don was appointed to the theatre faculty at the College of Eastern Utah, now Utah State University-Eastern, where he continued to serve until his retirement in 1998.
As a theatre academic and professional, Don served as an actor, director, designer and professor. His work was always distinguished for excellent taste and execution, and his students remember him fondly for his personal encouragement. As a designer, Don also created many ecclesiastical projects in every community in which he lived for the Episcopal Church, including vestments, banners and palls.
Don is survived by his wife, Pamela, Price; a daughter, Wendy (Wes) Clare, Tehachapi, Calif; and a son, Michael (Michelle), Pierce, Colo; four beloved grandchildren, Stephanie, Warren, Hannah, and Erin Clare, Tehachapi, Calif; sister, Shirley Adams Johnson, North Glenn, Colo; and sister-in-law, Audrey Graham, Fresno, Calif.
Don's family extends a huge thank you to all who assisted in caring for him in his last days.
Memorial service will be held at Ascension St. Matthew's (522 Homestead Blvd.) in Price, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price where friends are welcome daily and may share memories of Don at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Don Adams Memorial Fund at Ascension St. Matthew's Church in Price.
