PRICE - Our loving and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joyce Cima Johnson, age 88, died Jan. 26, 2013 in Price.
Joyce was born Nov. 10, 1924 in Helper, the eldest of three daughters of Ruth Olive Carter and John B. "Jack" Cima. Her mother was an accomplished seamstress and pianist who taught Joyce to sew and provided piano teachers for her. Joyce enjoyed growing up in their Helper neighborhood, playing on the O'Berto farm and attending school. She began a life-long love of swimming, taking every lesson offered at the Helper Pool, including senior life saving.
After the tragic death of her parents in August 1941, she lived with her grandparents, Byron and Botilda Carter, until she graduated from Carbon High School in May 1942. She attended Carbon College and St. Mary's of the Wasatch in Salt Lake City before entering the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in May 1945 as a Registered Nurse.
She married Mack Johnson in Helper on Sept. 5, 1945. They lived in Salt Lake while Mack attended college and she gave birth to her eldest daughter. She began playing golf, bridge and continued swimming.
They returned to Carbon County in 1948, when she went to work in a doctor's office. She continued her interests and began playing tennis and bowling. She also enjoyed dancing parties.
She left full time work in 1955 to continue her family. As her children were growing, she worked in nursing part-time. A life-long learner, she studied oil painting, advanced tailoring, and continued to study piano with expert teachers, including Frank Magliocco. As her children grew older, she went back to school so she could work in ICU at Carbon Hospital. She became a supervisor at the hospital and then became the Director of Nursing at the Carbon County Nursing Home. She got the red sports car she always wanted.
After retiring in 1986, she continued to play bridge and was still lap swimming in her 80's. Her greatest love was for her family and her profession. She never lost her zest for life.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Mack Johnson; children, Steffeny (Dick) Fazzio, Peggy Rasband, Kris (Tami) Johnson, Tamela (Larry) Johnson-Tannenbaum; grandchildren, Cameron Fazzio, Sean (Jennifer) Fazzio, Jef (Vinnie) Fazzio-Lawrence, Andrea Rasband, Natalie (Nick) Rasband-Stocking; great-grandchildren, Tony Bowen, Cameron Michael Fazzio, Maddison Lawrence, Michael Ray Fazzio, Caiman Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.
