Letter to the Editor

By R. Anthony Jackson
East Carbon

How do the rest feel?

I write these words somewhat in response to a letter published Dec. 20, 2012 (Letters to the Editor, Sun Advocate) referring to 'Carbon's drama queen."

I am a current resident of East Carbon and have been for going on eight years since importing myself from another state and purchasing property here.

I chose this area for the altitude, the mountains, the solitude and, hopefully I would meet nice folks with which to spend my retirement, or "golden" years, as they are sometimes called.

It is not my intention to respond personally to the author of that letter but to all of those people residing in Carbon County excluding East Carbon, Sunnyside, and Columbia, which is part of East Carbon.

You see, this person cast deep aspersions upon our city and insulted us by referring to the city as a "shanty town" in the name of all the people of Carbon County with the reference to, "being the center of embarrassing attention and the focus of county wide jokes." He also made inferences to the senior citizens by stating "18 percent of the population is 65 years old or older" within the same letter.

There was also included an inference to the Sun Advocate which I see that the editor noticed and responded to, as he should have.

What I'm here for is to ask all the folks of Carbon County if this individual speaks for all of you? Do you feel that we are what was stated? Do you promulgate and/or pass on these things?

I will neither denigrate nor ostracize myself by making disparaging remarks about things I see in other parts of this county, or any of the cities and towns. I participate in two group meetings held in Price so I wonder if possibly I should refrain because while the other participants in these groups are smiling and have been nice to me there may be a smirk behind that smile.

I do feel that we all have the right to our own personal opinions in America but not necessarily the moral right to express them publicly without due cause and especially to infer that others are sided with me. I do know of folks here in East Carbon and Sunnyside who have also been insulted as I have. We will be somewhat more cautious in our dealings, spending habits, etcetera, as a result, and may always be looking for that smirk. Certainly I don't feel this is neighborly, so I ask all of the rest of Carbon County to respond. Either this individual's viewpoint is common among you or it is not.

If it is, tell me but if it isn't would you be so kind as to tell that person here, in the Sun Advocate?
