It's games like this that head coach Jeff Cisneros knows will help his team down the stretch as the team prepares to enter Region 12 play.

In the second installment of the rivalry series with Emery High, the Carbon High Boys Basketball team used an early 16-5 run in the first quarter that gave the Dinos a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 67-59 victory over the Spartans at home on Friday night.

"It was a game of spurts," Cisneros said noting that the Dinos needed a final run in the fourth quarter to secure the win. "This is why we schedule games like this. Emery played physical all game long but the boys responded and played hard."

The Dinos raced out to an early lead in the first quarter that was topped when senior Jordan Blanc hit a 3-pointer as the first quarter ended giving the Dinos a 19-9 lead.

The Dinos took a 31-19 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Emery began their comeback which was aided when Carbon High's Derek Young was taken out of the game after picking up his third foul with four minutes left in the quarter.

Emery's Brendon Jorgensen hit a 3-pointer to start a rally that saw the Spartans cut the Dinos lead to 39-33. Dawson Jensen added a layup and Spencer Labrum made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead down to 42-36.

After a made free throw by the Dinos, Emery's Curtis Mason hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the quarter to cut the deficit down to 43-39.

But in the fourth quarter the Dinos stepped up as Young and Michael Peczuh helped lead the offense down the stretch as the Dinos never lead by less than four points the rest of the way.

After Emery closed the gap to 60-56, Peczuh made a key basket and was fouled with 37 seconds left. He converted the three-point play and gave Carbon a 63-56 lead with 37 seconds left.

Peczuh and Dakota Cisneros led the Dinos with 16 points each. Cisneros also added a team-high 11 assists.

Peczuh said he was glad that he could step in and help fill a void when Young was on the bench with foul trouble in the second half.

"It's fun being out there in the final minutes of a game like that," Peczuh said after the game. "It's kind of nerve wracking when Derek's off or in foul trouble, but I will do whatever the team needs me to do."

Despite struggling with foul trouble, Young finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Blanc added 11 points and six rebounds.

Dillon Wilstead led the Spartans (5-4) with 24 points.

Cisneros said the Dinos (7-4) have a lot they can improve on before beginning Region 12 play on Jan. 9 with a home game against Payson.

"This was a good victory for us. The holiday break has been a detriment to us in the past. This wasn't a pretty win but we'll take it," Cisneros said.
