Lady Dinos take down 5A's Lehi
Basinger leads Lady Dinos with 12 points as Carbon High wins physical 49-34 battle
Over the course of a season teams will play and win games in a not so pretty fashion. The Carbon High Lady Dinos have no problem with that after posting a 49-34 win over Lehi that had plenty of physical play throughout much of the game.
Playing against a higher level team, the Lady Dinos wasted no time as they jumped out to a 18-7 lead after the first quarter. The 11 point lead was built largely upon the Lady Dinos using their full court press to force Lehi in to making turnovers that led to baskets for Carbon.
Head coach Ted Bianco credited his team's defense with keeping Lehi from being able to overcome the early deficit.
"Our defense was superb," Bianco said after the game. "This was a tough physical game and we responded really well to it."
Carbon was able to stay firmly in the lead through the rest of the first half despite some chippy play between both teams. Carbon's Ashley Quinton was called for a technical foul late in the second quarter after a scrum for the ball between both teams.
Despite playing even with Carbon in the second quarter and heading into halftime down 29-18, Lehi was never able to cut into Carbon's lead after scoring just four points in the third quarter.
While Lehi was down by as many as 17 points, they continued to battle Carbon for every loose ball and rebound. Bianco was pleased the Lady Dinos did not back down from the physicality and continued to build onto their lead as the game progressed.
"We have to be ready to withstand body blows during a game while trying to keep a lead and we did tonight," he said.
Sophomore Katie Basinger led all Carbon scorers with 12 points. Her backcourt teammate junior Shailee Croasmun added 10 points.
Bianco credits the backcourt of Basinger and Croasmun with getting everything started on both offense and with the team's full court press.
"Shailee and I work well together out on the floor," said Basinger. "We make sure we control the ball and feed the ball to the low post on offense and try to force turnovers on defense with our press."
With good backcourt play and contributions from frontcourt players including Quinton, Shelby Cornforth and Giovanna Chiara, Bianco said the team is growing up real fast so early in the season.
"Night in an night out the girls have been battling back, playing hard," he said. "We're growing up quicker than I thought we would."
With the win, the Lady Dinos (4-3) are now in possession of first place in Region 12. There are still plenty of tests they must pass in the non-region schedule and it continues with a game tonight against rival Emery High tonight at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High Gymnasium.
In the last meeting back on Nov. 27, Emery used a strong second half to get past the Lady Dinos 40-24.
