Running for a cure

Tommy Locklin has seen the damage cystic fibrosis can have on a person living with it. He hopes a cure will one day be found and has embarked on a journey leading him across the country to raise awareness and funds.

Locklin, 30, arrived in Carbon County on Sunday evening and made his way outside of Price before calling it a night near Wellington.

Locklin started his run across the country on Sept. 22 in Seattle, Wash. On a typical day, Locklin will run between 18-20 miles a day. At this pace, Locklin said he should finish his journey in Daytona Beach, Fla., sometime in April.

"It's a really long journey, but it's all for a great cause," Locklin said as he looked at maps and updated his Facebook page at the McDonalds in Price.

Locklin and his travel companion and driver, Timothy Ettridge, have been working throughout the journey. At the end of that day's run, both men sometimes find themselves in the middle of nowhere leaving them to sleep for a few hours in a van that has been fitted with a wooden bed and loaded with supplies to last for a few days.

Despite the brutally cold weather and other elements they have run into during the trip, both Locklin and Ettridge said the journey has been worth every minute.

"I may get tired and feel exhausted at the end of a day but it's nothing compared to what a person with cystic fibrosis goes through," Locklin said explaining one thought that helps motivate him while running each day.
