Carbon High swim teams stay unbeaten against Uintah
The Carbon High Swim Team traveled to Uintah on Nov. 20 to take on a tough Utes team. Both teams were evenly matched in numbers, but facing a fast Uintah team the Dinos were up to the challenge as the Girls tied Uintah at 79 and the Boys winning 91 to 75. With the result, both the boys and girls teams are undefeated early in the season.
In the first event Uintah's 200 medley relay team just out touched Carbon's girls. Carbon's boys medley relay out swam Uintah's team finishing six seconds ahead of them. In the first individual event for the Carbon girls, the team took three of the top four places, Lauren Engar captured second place with a time of 2:34.79, Ali Heath in third (2:40.77), and Heidi Prettyman (2:46.02). In the Boys 200 free, Brent Keller captured first place with a time of 2:04.27. Keller's brother, Joseph Keller, took second with a time of 2:23.39 and Harrison Torgerson finished in fifth (2:44.29). The 200 I.M. was a struggle for the Dinos placing fourth, fifth and sixth.
Boys I.M. fared a little better as Joel Garff took second at (2:35.45) and Thory VanDyke took third (2:42.39). In the girls 50 free Lonnie Meineche swam to a first place finish with an impressive time of 26.94 and teammate Erica Mantz took third (31.48). The Dino boys dominated the 50 free as Dakota Powell took first place just out touching his teammate Lance Riche with Powell's time of 23.67 compared to Riche's time of 24.80.
In the 100 fly Lonnie Meineche finished in first over Uintah's top swimmer with a best time of 1:08.15. Tati Larsen took third and Ali Heath took fourth with her best time of 1:23.58. In the Boys 100 fly, Powell glided into a smooth first place finish with a time of 1:04.40, eight seconds in front of the closest competitor. In the Girls 100 free, Carbon finished on top with seven competitors, including three in the top three spots including Brittney Willson in first (1:08.61), Paula Gibson in second (1:10.60), and Susannah Ohlwiler in third (1:19.84).
In the boys 100 free Garff finished in second with a time of 57.42. The longest event of the night was the 500 free as Lauren Engar took third and Erica Mantz took fourth. In the boys 500 free, Brent Keller took first finishing 37 seconds in front of his closest competitor with a time of 5:35.34.
In the 200 free relays, the Carbon Girls finished in second place and boys took first. In the Girls 100 back, Brittney Willson captured first place. Also finishing in first for the boys was Lance Riche with his best time of the season at 1:05.36.
Carbon High Head Swim Coach Kamera Davis said the breaststroke is another event the girls team is weak in but they are slowly improving. Heidi Prettyman took fourth, Johanna Schmidt finished in fifth, Ashley Noyes sixth, Samm Jeppson in seventh, Angie Beaudonnet in eighth and Nicola Berchtenbreiter in 10th. In the boys 100 breaststroke, Carbon's VanDyke took first with a time of 1:14.12.
Going into the last event the Carbon girls were down in points. Coach Davis went to the relay teams and told them if there was any chance of the team finishing in a tie they would need to finish in first and second place. The first leg of the relay started with Carbon's Brittney Willson in first and Ali Heath in second place. In the next leg Carbon's Paula Gibson was in first and Erica Mantz in second. In the third leg, Carbon's Lauren Engar touches in first with Ashley Noyes just out touching Uintah's team. At this point it was so close between second and third place Carbon's A team touched in first with a time of 4:26.57. It was all up to rookie Susannah Ohlwiler to finish strong. Ohlwiler finished in second place with the difference between second and third being just five tenths of a second.
In the boys 400 free relay the Dino boys consisting of Riche, Garff, Keller, and Powell took first place.
Carbon's next meet took place against Emery High on Tuesday. Results from that meet will be printed as soon as they are made available.
