Wellington's new traffic semaphores began operating Tuesday morning. Highway 6.
They are not on timers, but are actuated by pedestrians pushing buttons on the corners. Cars approaching on 100 East will also activate sensors to get a green light.
The city has been asking for the devices for years because of safety concerns for pedestrians and cross traffic on the busy highway.
