Study shows improvement in Utah's hiring environment
A special study on job vacancies in Utah has just been release by the Department of Workforce Services (DWS). It is on the DWS website at http://jobs.utah.gov/opencms/wi/pubs/jvs/jvs12.pdf.
The Job Vacancy Study, conducted during the second quarter of 2012, measured the quantity and characteristics of job openings in Utah by six geographic areas: Statewide, Metropolitan, Northern, Southwestern, non-metropolitan and the Uintah Basin.
The study found that Utah's hiring environment has improved substantially since last surveyed in 2009. Some highlights from the study:
There were approximately 27,600 job openings in Utah at any time during the second quarter of 2012. The average offered wage of these openings was $14.10 an hour.
Computer software developers and registered nurses were among the most in-demand occupations that required postsecondary training.
Production related occupations led all major occupational groups in the northern region with 187 openings.
More than 46 percent of the openings in non-metropolitan Utah were of seasonal or temporary status, compared to only 12.4 percent statewide.
Openings filled fastest in the southwestern region, with 80 percent open less than 60 days.
Major occupational groups associated with natural resource extraction activities accounted for one third of all job openings in the Uintah Basin.
