Fire fighting units from across Carbon County have contained but have not yet extinguished a fire at a natural gas compressor station in a remote area about 20 miles east of Price. The blaze began with an explosion at about 10 a.m.

Several buildings at the the Dry Canyon facility were consumed, according to Bill Barrett Corp. spokesman Jim Felton. The corporation owns and operates the station.

Two workers were injured. Two medical helicopters landed near the station and transported them to the University of Utah Burn Center for treatment, Felton said. The names of the injured workers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

All gas wells in the area have been shut down and all personnel are accounted for, the spokesman said. Felton added that there have been no detected leaks or spills.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined, but is under investigation.

The Wellington Fire Department was first on the scene and called for backup from Helper, Price and East Carbon departments.

More details will be posted here as information becomes available.
