With playoff hopes gone, Lady Dinos look ahead to future
After losing a group of seniors last season and heading into this year with a team filled with plenty of youth and a new head coach, the Carbon High Volleyball team had aspirations of continuing the streak of CHS teams heading to the state tournament.
But that goal may have to wait until next year.
With two games left in Region 12 play, the Lady Dinos have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Since defeating Juab on Sept. 18, the Lady Dinos have dropped seven straight games which dropped them out of a possible playoff spot.
Carbon High Head Coach Danielle Jensen said despite the rough stretch of games, the team continues to battle in each game.
"It's been kind of a rough year for the team," said Jensen. "They've kept battling all season long though."
Jensen said a combination of losing a number of seniors from last season and having a young squad going into this year has played a factor.
"We've dealt with some inconsistencies over the season," Jensen said noting the team has gotten out to slow starts in many games this year. "We need to work on putting the ball away to get points if we want to be more competitive."
While working through a losing streak is hard enough, Jensen said the girls are upset about not being able to continue the streak of heading to the state tournament.
"They're upset about not making it," Jensen said. "We had a lot of changes coming into the season but we can't just show up and expect to make it to the state tournament."
While a shot at the playoffs is no longer an option, Jensen said there is plenty of things for the team to build on heading into next year.
"We have progressed over the season but it might be hard to see that because of our record," Jensen explained. "The team is playing better defense and they're developing a better sense of where they need to be out on the floor.
"Coming into a young program like this, it may take a few years of hard work to get back to the level where we want to be."
