Carbon FFA competes at SUU
Last week Carbon FFA members traveled to Cedar City to compete in 42nd annual judging competition hosted by the Southern Utah University Agriculture Club. Carbon Chapter members who competed were Katrina Basso, Mercedez Allred, KiLee Tanner, Morgan Johnson, Jamie Jewkes, Cody Austin, Dylan Barker, Alex Skaggs, Maya Anderson, Georgann Cook, Ashlee Beal, Vince Edwards, Konnyr Edwards, Lonnie Meineche (Mine-a-cuh), and Morgan Rummel.
These students judged horses, livestock or rangelands. Students in livestock and horse judging are expected to know proper ways to describe animals, such as a barrow is a castrated male pig. They need to know what the ideal animal should look like in the respective species. Range judges must be able to identify 90 rangeland plants and determine the toxicity, life cycles, ecological zones and benefits of the plants.
The next competition will be held at Snow College on October 9.. Categories will include Dairy, Livestock and horse judging, Agronomy (Crops), land, range, agricultural mechanics and floriculture.
Members of FFA gain experience in decision making, communications and more depending on their respective events. Haley Shiner was the 2011-2012 Reporter for Carbon FFA. She is currently at Mesa State University in Colorado majoring in Biology and Education with hopes of becoming an Agriculture Teacher.
