Lady Eagles flying high after winning conference opener

Getting off to a good start in Scenic West Athletic Conference play was one of the goals for the Lady Eagles heading into the season.
Consider that goal accomplished.
USU Eastern went on the road Saturday to Rangely, Colo., where they picked up their first SWAC victory of the year with a three-set sweep (25-9, 25-14, 25-10) over Colorado Northwestern Community College.
The game was the first of three road games to start the SWAC play for the Lady Eagles with upcoming trips to Snow College and Salt Lake Community College this Friday and Saturday.
Head coach Chelsey Warburton said the team has had a pretty good start to the season despite having nine freshmen on the squad.
"They're really scrappy and they battle for every point," she said.
With four sophomores on the team, Warburton said the team has been pushing each other both in practice and in games.
The team pushed each other to a three-set win (25-23, 25-21, 27-25) over the Salt Lake All-Stars on Friday night at the Bunnell-Dmitrich Athletic Center.
Sophomore Whitney Fieldsted led the Lady Eagles with 13 kills on the night. Freshmen Jessica Wilcox added eight kills and Kathy Collette finished with six.
Freshman Lauren Karn had a team-high 17 assists and libero Malorie White led the team with 12 digs.
While the team is still working out some of the kinks from the beginning of the season, Warburton said SWAC play will test the team every night on the court.
"It's just pure competition in SWAC play," she said. "It's going to get a lot harder for us from here."
