Wellington to triple cemetery acreage

A land swap between Wellington and the Carbon School District will triple the size of the city's cemetery. On Wednesday, the city council passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Ben Blackburn to sign the quit claim deed for the transfer.

When the deal is final, Wellington will get an L-shaped parcel that wraps around the cemetery on the south and west sides. That will add 8.88 acres for additional plots and parking at the cemetery, which is now 4.44 acres.

In trade, the school district will get 10.46 acres of city property at 1100 East Main. There is no money involved in the deal.

Blackburn said that the difference in acreage is not an issue. The location of the acquired property makes it a greater value to the city than the property it is ceding, while the distric gets a parcel that is better suited for its purposes, he explained.
