After starting their new baseball program off with two wins last week, the Pinnacle Canyon Academy Panthers baseball team will be looking to overcome their first true test after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Tintic on Friday afternoon at the USU Eastern Baseball field.

PCA lost the first game 11-1 and dropped the second game 16-1.

PCA head coach Jason Jaramillo said the team had trouble hitting the ball in both games, as Tintic pitchers kept Panther hitters off balance all day long.

"The Tintic pitchers shut down our offense in both games," Jaramillo said. "Bottom line is we just got outplayed by a very good team."

Jaramillo said the Panthers were without one of their team leaders as senior starting catcher Chris Smith was out with a hand injury.

Jaramillo praised Tintic's play during the doubleheader, citing the small things batters did including sacrificing to move runners over, getting base hits to all fields and using experience of playing together to their advantage.

Of the notable plays for the Panthers, freshman Noah Mascarenas broke up a no-hitter in the first game by getting an RBI single.

Now with a 2-2 record, Jaramillo hopes the team will use the experience of playing a tough team like Tintic to get better as the season continues to progress.

"The guys have seen what it takes to play against tough teams," he said. "This week was a real eye-opener for us and hopefully that will help us next week."

The Panthers will host their final doubleheader of the season against Manila on Friday with the first game to start at 2 p.m.
