New E Clampus Vitus plaque commemorates Carbon Fuel disaster that killed 9 coal miners
Ralph Fossat, Bernice Mascarenas and Frances Price stand beside the new historic marker dedicated by the Matt Warner Chapter of E Clampus Vitus Saturday morning at the north end of the Helper River Parkway trail. All three of them had loved ones in the 1963 Carbon Fuel mine explosion in Hardscrabble Canyon that killed nine coal miners. About 50 people showed up for the ceremony.
The explosion occurred at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 16. Fatalities listed on the marker are: Mark Ardohain, Andy Juvan, Heino Linn, Gerald Nielsen, Benjamin Valdez, Victor Fossat, Archie A. Larsen, Benino Montoya and John Senechal.
Ten miners survived the blast.
