Fire fighters were expected to continue establishing a cordon of backfires Thursday to contain the Seeley Fire, which had grown to more than 42,000 acres (65.8 square miles) by 8 a.m.

The fire was 17 percent contained. The burnout operations have kept the fire from approaching the community of Clear Creek. People will see smoke from the burnout operations over Huntington Creek, Castle Valley and Bob Wright Canyon. A hand crew will also be building another fire line near Candland Mountain.

The force has grown to 690 fire fighters, which includes 15 20-person hand crews.

Cost of the suppression effort was reported at $3.8 million since the fire began June 26.
