Road woes continue for Helper

In another tough nail biting game which went down to the wire, the Helper American Legion baseball team couldn't get the big hit when it needed one falling 4-3 to Taylorsville on Monday evening.

Helper held a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth inning but was unable to keep Taylorsville from scoring runs to take the lead and eventually the game.

Head coach Jeff Cisneros said his team left too many players on base throughout the game, counting over 12 players that reached second or third base before being stranded.

"We just left way too many players in scoring position in the game," Cisneros said. He noted that Helper outhit Taylorsville throughout the game but couldn't get the big hit with runners in scoring position in the late innings.

Jake Nichols led the Helper offense with a multi-hit game including two doubles.

Because Helper's game against Taylorsville was their only one this week, Cisneros said he went with multiple pitchers to help keep their arms loose. Dakota Cisneros started the game and was later relieved by Brandon Oliver and Nichols.

Helper's lead in the game was hampered by two errors in the game, including one hit by a Taylorsville player that took an unlucky bounce over Seth Tryon's head which led to an inside-the-park home run, Cisneros said.

With the loss, Helper's record in the Salt Lake Valley region is now 6-3 with an overall record of 11-8, which puts them two games back of first place West.

Cisneros said the team will need to play better on the road as Helper's record is now 1-8 on the road, compared to a perfect 10-0 record at home.

Helper will resume play on Monday evening when they will host Westlake for a game at the Carbon High baseball field at 6 p.m.
