Pat Scherschel shows members of the Castle Country Quilters what a finished service banner looks like. The quilters have taken on a project to make a banner for the families of each National Guardsman who has been called for duty in Afghanistan. The flags were first used in World War I. Traditionally, a family can have one blue star on the banner for each member serving in combat. A gold star indicates that a family member has died in the service of country.
