For the 60th consecutive year a parade of little league baseball players paraded up Helper's Main Street on Friday evening of the May 11-12 weekend to kick off the baseball season for the young diamond enthusiasts of the North Carbon area.

Led by a Helper fire truck, the players walked, rode trailers or ran as they waved to onlookers.

Moving to Walt Borla field in the northwest section of town, an appropriate flag raising ceremony preceded the introduction of the coaches and team members as they were called out upon the field. The complements of three major league teams and five minor league teams were introduced. Once all were on the field, Ronald Jewkes of Kenilworth came to the mound to throw out the ceremonial first ball of the season.

Jewkes, a long time booster of the activity, was president of the Helper league the year that they won the WBBA championship at the final tournament in Springville during the mid 60s. He has had two sons play in the league through the years and now enjoys watching his grandsons participate.

Following the activity at the field, the league hosted over 200 players, coaches, parents and boosters at a spaghetti and salad dinner at the Helper Junior High School.

The following day, Saturday, saw the opening of game competition taking place on two fields, the Helper league now having the convenience of two fields with the resurrection of the original little league field on the east side of town just above the city park.
