Wellington police have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of being the masked rapist who broke into a woman's apartment and assaulted her on Jan. 13.

Sgt. Kelly Maynes identified the man as Dwaine Stacey Shaw of Wellington. The suspect was booked Tuesday on charges of aggravated rape, aggravated forcible sodomy, aggravated sexual assault aggravated burglary and aggravated kidnapping.

Maynes said the victim could not identify the face of her assailant because he had been wearing a mask at the time. She did, however, provide information that pointed in the suspect's direction.

The sergeant also said that Chief Lee Barry was able to collect evidence at the scene that Barry hand-delivered to the state crime lab.

The chief stated that DNA evidence collected at the scene conclusively led to Shaw. However, he noted, the evidence may have been processed sooner if the crime lab had enough funding to process the large number of DNA samples submitted by the state's law enforcement agencies.

Maynes was the chief investigator in the case, with assistance from Helper and Price police, the Sheriff's Department and Adult Probation and Parole.

He said police were first notified when a neighbor of the victim called 911. The victim herself then managed to escape from the attacker and drove to Price, where she then called dispatch. There was some confusion at the time because it appeared at first that there were two rapes in two cities, when it was the same crime reported twice.
