The Elgin Cemetery in Green River has many graves that are un-marked and in need of a headstone. For the last two years Beta Zeta Sorority has chosen to make this their project, to buy and place headstones on every unmarked grave that is over 50 years old.

Working with the Elgin Cemetery Sexton, Joanne Ekker, the group anticipates needing 67 headstones at this time, and as research is done possibly more.

The granite monuments will be 4 X 8 X 16 inches. The stones will be ordered and engraved by Worley, Jensen Monuments.Husbands of the sorority members will then make forms, pour cement and set them.

The sorority has now collected enough money through dinners, yard/bake sales and raffles to proceed with an order for 50 headstones.

With only 11 members, this has been a big project for the group. "We appreciate all the support we have received, especially from Joanne Ekker, the Ben Coomers and others that have helped in researching names for the headstones," said Norma Dean Hawkinson of Beta Zeta.

Beta Zeta is a philanthropic organization, the Green River chapter of ESA (Epsilon Sigma Alpha), a powerful network that brings people together to accomplish good things in local, national, and global communities.

Those who live outside the Green River area and have information on any unmarked graves or would like to help to with this project can send contributions to Beta Zeta, Box 235, G.R. 84525.
