Civic Orchestra to perform Saturday at Rio

The Price Civic Orchestra will perform a few centuries worth of musical styles, ranging from J. S. Bach to movie composer Ennio Morricone, this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Helper's Rio Theatre.

Several of the numbers in the concert should be familiar to movie-goers. "Adagio in G Minor," attributed to Baroque composer Tomaso Albinoni, has been heard in the scores of the movies "Gallipoli" and the original 1975 "Rollerball."

A section of Mozart's Symphony No. 25 was made famous in the film "Amadeus."

"Gabriel's Oboe" was composed for the movie "The Mission" by Ennio Morricone, who gained fame beginning with scores for the "Spaghetti Westerns" of the mid-1960s.

"Hoedown" from Aaron Copland's ballet score, "Rodeo," should be recognized by anyone who has seen the commercial, "Beef: It's What's for Dinner," but it was famous in its own right for decades.

Gabriel Faure's "Pavane" was the music for a skating competition scene in the 2010 version of the movie "Ice Castles."

Russell Wilson is conductor and music director of the Price Civic Orchestra. The string group includes performers from Carbon and Emery counties. It has grown steadily over the years under his direction.

The acoustics of the Rio Theatre are "friendly" to string players, and those who attend Saturday's concert will be among the first to sit in the new seats the city has recently installed.

Admission is free, but the concert is for the benefit of Active Re-Entry, so a $5 donation is recommended. The money is to help replace the trailer that was stolen, leaving the agency short of a way to transport wheelchairs and scooters that its handicapped clients need.
