An early look at career education

More than 300 eight and ninth graders got a glimpse of career opportunities - and the educational facilities dedicated to developing those opportunities - at the USU Eastern Career Center Tuesday.

They broke into small groups and took a guided tour of the automotive, welding, diesel, cosmetology and drafting departments at the college. The students also got to hear presentations from instructors in each department.

Carbon High School counselor Melissa Swenson said that the tour originated with a suggestion from a college automotive instructor that young people might want an introduction to the opportunities available in the workplace.

Swenson added that the college and school district are going to make the Career and Technical Education program available next fall for 10th graders as well as for high school juniors and seniors.
