Fighting against blustury winds and with only half a roster of athletes competing at the meet, the Carbon High track team competed well and even set a few team bests at the Delta High School Invitational on Saturday.

CHS track coach Jimmy Jewkes said the conditions at the meet in Delta were not ideal. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph helped create a little bit of havoc for the athletes participating in a wide range of events.

Despite the conditions, the boys team finished in ninth place with 28.5 points and the girls took fifth with 39 points.

For the boys, Daulton Nelson took sixth in the 100 meter with a time of 12.31seconds and finished ninth in the 200 meter with a time of 25.61 seconds.

Luke Olsen finished tenth in the 400 meter run.

Tyler Johnson capped off a successful day with a third place finish in the 110 meter hurdles at 16.57 seconds and a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles at 42.41 seconds.

For the girls, Kayleigh Potts finished first in the girl's high jump with a leap of 5.01 feet.

Amanda Freestone also capped off a successful day in a number of events. Freestone took third in the 100 meter run with a time of 14.08 seconds and she took fifth in the 200 meter run with a time of 29.56 seconds. She also competed in the 300 meter hurdles finishing seventh with a time of 51.65 seconds.

While fighting through shin splints, Carbon's Regan Powell also had a good day. Powell took first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35 and she finished in second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:32:40, over one second behind the first place finisher.

"Despite the weather we did really well overall," Jewkes said.

The Carbon High track team will now be preparing for their only home meet of the year on Saturday, April 14. Because of the size of the event, Jewkes said volunteers will be needed to help out with the events. For more information on volunteering for the meet, contact Carbon High School at 637-2463.
