A suspect who led law enforcement officers on a chase at speeds of up to 100 mph through Spanish Fork and Price Canyons has been captured in a foot chase after he abandoned his vehicle near the water treatment plants at Castle Gate north of Helper.

The chase began at about 11:45 a.m. in Spanish Fork Canyon west of the Tie Fork rest stop in Utah County. A Utah County deputy sheriff notified public safety dispatch that he was pursuing a vehicle that was refusing to yield.

Within minutes, the escaping vehicle had passed Soldier Summit and was heading down Price Canyon toward Helper on US 6.

At mile marker 227, about 10 miles northwest of Helper, the fleeing vehicle evaded spikes that had been placed on the highway, barely missing a Carbon County Sheriff's deputy at the scene.

Pursuers lost sight of the vehicle shortly after that. The vehicle was then spotted abandoned at the water treatment plant and the manhunt began.

Sun Advocate publisher Richard Shaw got a photograph of the suspect, who was being handcuffed on a road leading to building near the treatment plants.

Westbound traffic had been stopped at Helper while the chase was in progress.

The Sun Advocate will post further details as they become available.
