While there might be a great distance between Price and St. George, the Carbon High girls basketball team are heading down the exact path they expected to be on starting back in November.

In front of a raucous home crowd, Carbon defeated Ogden High 56-35 on Friday night to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the 3A state tournament. The girls will take on Judge Memorial on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Dixie State College.

Carbon wasted no time in getting things going, jumping out to an early 11-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

Playing a first round playoff game at home was a relief and played a key role in the win, said Carbon High head coach Ted Bianco.

"It's hard as heck to win on the road in the playoffs," he said. "Playing at home makes a huge difference."

Carbon attacked Ogden by passing the ball inside the key, which opened up shots from the outside and drives to the basket.

Defensively Carbon kept the Ogden offense off balance, never allowing their lead to sink below nine points.

For Carbon the win gets them their ticket punched to St. George and a step closer to the championship.

"This feels great," said senior Miranda Averett, who finished with a team-high 18 points. "We're right where we want to be."

While the win feels good, Carbon still has a lot of work in front of them if they want to continue on in the tournament.

"They've been here before and they have the motivation to go far in the tournament again," Bianco said. "But no matter who we play, it will take a total team effort to win."
