Tough loss ends Carbon High boys season

After a loss, especially one in a tournament setting, it can be difficult to find a silver lining after battling through a three month long season.

But for the Carbon High boys basketball team, beneath the frustration and emotion after falling to Ben Lomond 73-52 on Saturday night, it might be difficult to see a silver lining through the darkness.

Carbon and Ben Lomond played a close first half before the Scots were able to open up a 25-18 lead going into halftime.

At the start of the third quarter, Ben Lomond began to pull away as they gathered a 17 point lead towards the end of the quarter.

Carbon High head coach Jeff Cisneros said Ben Lomond took advantage of the scoring down low in the paint.

Carbon was able to cut the lead down to five in the beginning moments of the fourth quarter, gathering momentum that seemed to be reminiscent from their last game against Ben Lomond back on Dec. 10.

But unfortunately for the Dinos, that would be the closest they could get as Ben Lomond took over control of the game and never looked back.

"They outrebounded us and they dictated the game," Cisneros said. "Ben Lomond really took advantage of every scoring opportunity down low."

Injuries seemed to hit the Dinos at the wrong time of the season. Junior Derek Young missed the game with a broken arm. Juniors Jordan Blanc and Dakota Cisneros both were slowed by ankle injuries. Those injuries may have contributed to what Cisneros said he saw on the court during the game.

"It didn't look like we played with a lot of emotion during the game," he said.

While the game was the last for five seniors on the squad, Cisneros said next year is looking promising with a number of returning players. Juniors Blanc, Dakota Cisneros, Young, Taje Richardson and Bryce Blackburn will all return with plenty of experience for next year's squad.

While the team had a goal of making it down state, Cisneros said he is still proud with the effort shown by the team, who finished with a winning record for only the second time in the last 15 years.

"Getting the team down to state was the goal, but we didn't get it done this year" he said. "However, I couldn't be more proud than with the season we had this year."
