After spending hours in the gym working on her jump shot, playing summer ball and helping guide the offense as a senior leader on the floor, one Carbon High basketball player knows that hard work can pay off in the end.

Miranda Averett was recently nominated to the McDonald's All-American team last week, prestigious group of high school basketball players from across the country.

"It was great to hear about being nominated to the team," Averett said after Carbon High's 42-21 win over Payson on Thursday night. "It's taken a lot of hard work and practicing every day."

Averett credits her success thanks to her teammates, noting they have played together for many years.

Over the summer Averett played summer ball and focused on improving her shooting and getting assists. That summer work has helped Averett to average 15 points per game this season for the Lady Dinos.

Averett said the team has the goal of finishing first place in Region 12 and making it far at the 3A State Tournament.

"We hate to lose games," she said. "We just need to keep our focus and work hard over the rest of the season."

The nominees for the All-American team are chosen by coaches, athletic directors from every state as well as McDonald's officials. The McDonald's High School All-American games take place in Chicago on March 28.
