With the Carbon High Lady Dinos down by 16 on the road against Delta at halftime, they faced a tough road to get back in the game.

In the second half, they took a different path, forcing the game into overtime and ultimately walking away with a tough 45-37 victory on Tuesday night to stay undefeated in Region 12 play.

Carbon High head coach Ted Bianco said the team did not play well in the first half, converting on only three field goals in the first half, as they faced a 26-10 deficit at the half.

"We just didn't shoot the ball well at all in the first half," Bianco said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

The second half was a much different story. The Lady Dinos settled down, playing better defense and rebounding more efficiently.

The better play in the second half helped the Lady Dinos cut into Delta's lead, outscoring them 14-2, heading into the fourth quarter down by only four points.

Bianco said both teams traded baskets down to the wire. The Lady Dinos were called for an intentional foul late in the game but Delta was unable to capitalize on the free throws.

Carbon's Miranda Averett was able to tie the game on two free throws to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Lady Dinos began to put the game away as they clamped down on defense and made enough plays on offense to come away with the big road win.

"In overtime the girls stepped up and didn't want to go home with a loss," Bianco said. "They are very competitive and really hate losing games."

Despite facing an early deficit, Bianco said the team responded well to the challenge of playing Delta, who also entered the game with a 4-0 Region 12 record.

"We got punched in the face in the first half but we responded to the challenge. We made adjustments at halftime and the girls played much better overall in the second half to get the win with first place in region on the line," Bianco explained.

Averett led the Lady Dinos with 15 points. Lexi Gagon and Kelcy Otani each added nine points each.

A balanced attack on offense with different players stepping up in games has helped the Lady Dinos all season long, Bianco said.

"It's hard to defend all five players on the court at the same time especially when they can all make shots," he said.

The Lady Dinos (12-3, 5-0 Region 12) will take on Payson tonight at 7 p.m. at the CHS gymnasium.

While the team is still undefeated in Region 12 play, Bianco said they will be playing each team with the knowledge that everyone will be looking to knock them off.

"We need to keep doing things well, execute our plays and continue playing good defense. We can't overlook any of our opponents on any night" he said.
