Both the Carbon High boys and girls teams ventured up to Payson for their first taste of Region 12 play in the 2011-12 season. But only one team was able to come away unscathed from the first region road trip.

The Carbon High girls basketball team was able to get off to a perfect 1-0 start in Region 12 after they defeated Payson 59-19 on Tuesday night.

The Lady Dinos jumped out to an early 16-5 lead after the first quarter and were never challenged through the rest of the game. They lead 30-8 at halftime and outscored Payson 15-0 in the third quarter on their way to a win.

Senior Miranda Averett led the Lady Dinos with 15 points. Fellow seniors Regan Powell and Rachel Scoggins each finished with double digits in points with 14 and 11 respectively.

The Lady Dinos (8-3, 1-0 Region 12) will next play Spanish Fork tonight at 7 p.m. at the CHS gymnasium.

For the Carbon High boys team, the road trip to Payson was not as kind. After playing a close game through the first half, Payson began to pull away from the Dinos as they outscored them 42-23 for the 81-59 win on Tuesday night.

Down by three at the half, Carbon was unable to establish a rhythm offensively in the second half. Adding to their woes was another difficult night at the free throw line. Carbon finished 11-of-27 (41 percent) from the line compared to Payson who finished 7-of-9 (78 percent).

Senior Clay Finkbiner led all Carbon players with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Junior Jordan Blanc added nine points on three three-pointers, and senior Tanner Gagnon had eight points.

The Dinos (7-4, 0-1 Region 12) will next play Spanish Fork on Friday at 7 p.m. at the CHS gymnasium.
