Walking on water can be dangerous - if it's frozen

If you must walk on ice or snow, take special precautions to avoid falling. The Southeastern Utah District Health Department offers these suggestions:

* Stay on the sidewalk. If you must step off the curb, stay as close to the edge of the street as possible. Drivers can't brake as effectively on snow or ice:

* Remember that snow muffles the sound of traffic;

* Try to avoid carrying heavy packages;

* Take it slow, wear non-slip shoes, and wear brightly colored gear or reflective gear if possible;

* Learn how to shovel snow safely. Check with your doctor because this can be strenuous exercise. People with cardiac conditions or asthma may not be able to tolerate cold-weather exercise.
