PRICE/SALT LAKE CITY - Chris Himonas was surrounded by her loving family as she left this world for the next on Dec. 15, 2011.

Born Nov. 22, 1934, in Gavalohori, Crete, Greece, to Alexander and Koula Papathakis Proestakis, she left Greece in 1956 and immigrated first to Canada and then to the United States. She married George Himonas in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price on Nov. 25, 1962.

Chris was an independent, strong-willed woman who set her own course. She was a hairdresser by training and opened her own beauty shop in the early 1970s. She followed this path until 2008, when she and George moved to Salt Lake City to be nearer to their son Deno, daughter-in-law Lisa, and granddaughters Alexa and Kate. There is much more to her amazing story, but Chris insisted we keep this short-we are honoring her wishes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Alexandra Peperakis, Andigoni Zografakis, Maria Kanakakis, brother Mike Proestakis, brothers-in-law Mike Himonas, Angelo Peperakis, Manoli Zografakis, Pavlo Kanakakis, and Haralambos Daskalogiani, sister-in-law Stacy Himonas, mother-in-law Athena Kontas, and father in-law, Gust Himonas.

She is survived by her husband, George Himonas; son, Deno (Lisa) Himonas; granddaughters, Alexa and Kate; sisters, Zoe Peperakis, Tasia Peperakis (Mihali), and Vasiliki Daskalogiani; brothers, Nick Proestakis (Athena) and Paris Proestakis (Kaliope); in-laws, Gust Himonas (Vale), Nick Kontas (Joyce), Frank Kontas (BoAnn), Marika Proestakis, and many loving nieces and nephews.

A viewing was held Dec. 17, 2011, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 E. Main Street, Price, with the Trisagion Service immediately following. Funeral service, was Dec. 17, 2011 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
