Carbon wrestlers take loss against Union, team continuing to improve

After a game it can be deceiving to look up and have the scoreboard tell the whole story of an athletic event.

In this particular case, Carbon may have a good argument in favor of that theory.

The Carbon High wrestling team hosted Union High School but were unable to get the victory as Union defeated Carbon 72-6 on Tuesday night.

CHS wrestling head coach Therl Mikesell said the final score of the match doesn't give all of the details surrounding the match's final result.

Because they were not able to fill six weight classes during the match, Carbon was forced to forfeit matches in six weight classes. That resulted in Union being awarded 36 points essentially before the match was started.

In a bit of irony, Carbon's only points of the night came by Union having to forfeit a match.

Despite the final result, Mikesell said he was pleased with the effort the team displayed in the match.

"The score doesn't really show it, but I was very pleased with our effort against Union," Mikesell said. "The wrestlers pushed themselves really hard this time and showed a lot of motivation going into the match."

With a young squad consisting of a lot of first and second year wrestlers, Mikesell said the team is still progressing as the team is nearing the mid-point of the season. Over the last three weeks, Carbon has participated in five different matches and meets which has challenged the team, Mikesell said.

"The last three weeks have been on of the busiest parts of the season for us, but we're seeing progression being made and that's a positive for our team," he said.

The team will travel to North Sanpete tonight for a match and will head to St. George for the weekend Desert Storm tournament.
