Sophomore Santos leads women's team back to winning record; Freshman Flint sparks men's team with two triple-doubles

With no games on tap for the next two weeks due to the holiday break, the USU Eastern men's and women's basketball teams wanted to go out with some momentum.

Consider it mission accomplished for both squads.

After playing all of their games on the road for the first month and a half of the season, the USU Eastern women's team was finally able to enjoy playing in the confines of their home court at the B-DAC. Their long wait to play at home resulted in a 84-69 win against the Utah All-Stars.

The Utah All-Stars kept pace with Eastern through the first half, even leading by 10 points at one point before Eastern took the lead into halftime 38-35.

In the second half, Eastern extended their lead to as much as 16 before the Utah All-Stars made a run to cut the lead to single digits. However the Lady Eagles were able to hold their lead through rebounding missed shots and causing turnovers.

Sophomore Priscila Santos, who has lit up the nets of many different gymnasiums this season, was able to show the hometown crowd why she is one of the top female junior college players in the country. Santos who came into the game averaging a nation leading 29.7 points per game, scored a game-high 42 points and 16 rebounds. Santos displayed a quickness off the dribble which allowed her to get numerous jump shots off and consistently drove to the basket drawing fouls.

Freshman guard Hailee Parry consistently applied pressure defensively on the Utah All-Stars and helped control the fast break for the Lady Eagles on numerous occasions. Parry finished with 12 points, three rebounds and a team-high eight assists. Freshmen Caitlin Nelson added eight points and 10 rebounds.

After the holiday break the USU Eastern women (7-6) will next face the Idaho Club Team on Dec. 29 and 30.

The USU Eastern men's team came home for two home games against the Southern Colorado Kings and Atwater Prep and were able to come away with two wins, breaking a two-game losing streak to Western Wyoming in the process.

In their game Friday night against the Southern Colorado Kings, Eastern battled with the visitors in the first half which was a back and forth affair. The Kings went into halftime with a 38-35 lead.

In the second half, Eastern finally began to gather some momentum. With the game tied at 44-44, freshman Dashaun Wiggins got a steal and converted a layup to give Eastern a 46-44 lead, one they would not relinquish.

Eastern led by as many as 11 in the second half before coming away with the 80-72 win.

Wiggins led the team with 25 points. Freshman Chase Flint made his mark on the box score with a triple-double as he finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

Sophomore Neveij Walters had 19 points and six rebounds and freshman McKay LaSalle added 12 points.

In their second game against Atwater Prep, Eastern quickly ran out to a big lead before putting away the visitors 110-59.

After trailing 11-9 with 14 minutes to go in the first half, Eastern turned on the afterburners putting the game out of reach, ending the half on a 37-17 run.

In the second half it was more of the same story, as Eastern put the game away as they converted scoring opportunities and didn't allow the visitors back into the game.

Five Eastern players finished in double digits with points. LaSalle led the team in scoring with 21 points, Wiggins had 20 and freshman Travon Langston added 12. Walters finished with 11.

But again, Flint stole the show as he notched his second triple-double in two days with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists.

The USU Eastern men's team will next play on Jan. 3, 2012 at home against a team that has yet to be announced.
