Carbon High girl's lose close game to Richfield
In a back and forth battle, 2A Richfield and 3A Carbon High battled to the final moments in Tuesday night's game before the Lady Wildcats were able to slip past the Lady Dinos 44-40.
In a close first half between the two teams, Carbon was able to get a halftime lead 20-17.
In the third quarter, Richfield and Carbon could not separate themselves as they both scored 12 points with Carbon having a lead of 32-29 going into the final quarter.
The game came down to the wire, but in the end Richfield capitalized on Carbon's mistakes in outscoring the Lady Dinos 15-8 to get the road win.
Miranda Averett led Carbon with 16 points and Amanda Freestone added 12.
Carbon High head coach Ted Bianco said Richfield came into the game as the number one team in 2A and told his team it was going to be a tough game to win.
"We knew going in it was going to be tough against them," Bianco said. "They pressed us which slowed us down quite a bit."
Bianco cited the team's 22 turnovers as the "difference of the game" in the loss.
Despite the mistakes and turnovers, Carbon was still up by three with three minutes to go. Carbon only shot two free throws in the game compared to the 23 free throws that Richfield attempted.
While the loss was not the outcome Carbon wanted, Bianco said he was pleased with the effort the girls put into the game against a tough opponent.
"This game had the feel of a state tournament game," Bianco said. "The girls played hard and still had a chance to win despite all of the mistakes we made."
