Powerful winds rip through county

Gusts of up to 60 miles per hour roared through Carbon County Thursday, toppling trees, damaging homes and causing spotty power outages during the early morning hours.

While the winds here did not match the force and damage inflicted on the Wasatch Front, there were reports of outages in Price and Helper. At the corner of 800 North and Cedar Hills Drive in Price, one power pole was badly cracked at its based.

It was held in place by a the grip of the Rocky Mountain pole installation truck until it could be replaced Friday afternoon.

Also in Price, a tall pine tree was uprooted. It was sawn and carted away later in the day. Kenilworth also had a tree fall caused by the wind.

The wind blew out multiple windows at Kraync Motors in Price.

"It was like someone shot a 30.06 through them," said Karl Kraync, owner of the business. "They just exploded."

Kraync estimated that at least one of the windows would cost $1000 to replace.

Elsewhere in Castle Country, traffic was disrupted for close to an hour outside the town of Emery when two coal trucks were unable to make the grade on a hill on the snow-slicked Highway 10. More photos are on page 11A.
