Stalks of construction rebar blossom with protective plastic caps as workers begin raising the walls of the county's new animal shelter on Airport Road. Interwest Construction is the general contractor on the $1,439,000 building. Of that money, some $800,000 will be channeled to local subcontractors. When completed, the structure will have 6,000 square feet of space to house homeless animals ranging from dogs and cats to larger mammals or a few reptiles now and then. The project will be funded by a grant and loan from the state Community Impact Board.
