Latest Historical Journal features stories and photos of Castle Gate
Former residents of Castle Gate will be interest to know that the 2011 issue of the Carbon County Historical Society's Journal deals exclusively with articles concerning the now-defunct coal camp.
Titled "Castle Gate, Gone But Not Forgotten," the booklet contains 16 articles and several pictures of what was once the premier coal camp of Carbon County.
The articles are written by several former residents or from historical documents passed down by relatives.
Photos in the journal will rekindle the memories of those who remember living there.
Among the pictures are:
A photo of the historical Castle Gate before the highway department cut back one side of the gate;
the tipple and coke ovens;
the Castle Gate store and company office building where Butch Cassidy and gang pulled off the famous payroll robbery;
and photos of the school house, LDS church, the doctor's office and hospital.
Current officers of the historical society are Ileen Gibbons, President; Eldon Miller, Vice president; Helen Segura, Treasurer; Kathy Hamaker, Historian, and Lori Perez, Secretary.
Copies of the booklet are available at the Helper Mining and Railroad Museum or by calling Ileen Gibbons at 637-6126.
